The reason gays are hated in Russia is, in my opinion, twofold:
1) Russia is a post-Soviet state, and because of that, a large chunk of Russian population was born in the Soviet Union, where homosexuality was deemed a mental illness
2) Our religion. Russia is strongly religious. We have the Eastern Orthodox church, which is a more conservative form of the Protestant church, and being gay just goes against our values. It's non-Russian.
