What we know for sure
- There has been a Banwave
- the "failed to get game data from the server" error does NOT necessarily mean that you are banned.
- most users that have been banned have been using bots but some spoofers have also been banned
- several bots including NecroBot and Hexton have stopped supporting their projects after the banwave
Banwave
Last night and continuing throughout today Niantic has initiated a ban wave to ban those that use spoofers to fake their GPS location and those that use 3rd party programs to automatically play the game for them. Most of the cheaters that have been banned over the last 24 hrs were those that use open source 3rd party Programs to cheat, it’s a logical step for Niantic to be banning these cheaters first as the programs are often easy to detect when the code is out there for everyone to see.
If you have been banned from Pokemon Go you will receive a email about the termination of your account.
"Failed to get game data from the server"
The banwave has caused server issues for PokemonGO today and this is the reason for the "failed to get game data from the server" message, at this time this message does NOT mean that you have been banned and is purely the result of server lag/issues. Many trainers that have received the "failed to get game data from the server" error have been able to login to the game a couple of hours later.
However be aware that trainers that have used bots have reported seeing the "failed to get game data from the server" error before getting a ban message on their account, however the error alone has happened to a vast amount of users that have not been banned from the game.
Geo Blocked regions
If you have been using various methods to play Pokemon GO while in a geo-blocked region this may also result in a ban although this depends on the method that u used in order to play the game. If you were so lucky that you could simply download a API and played the game normally you will be fine. If you had to use a spoofer to appear in another country or area of your country you may receive a email from Niantic about your account termination, but unless you have used the spoofing mechanism to move locations rapidly, you are probably fine.
With the rumored shutdown of NecroBot through legal action and Hexton also shutting down earlier this week in combination with the current banwave. Botting and spoofing has taken a hit, hopefully Niantic will continue to aggressively deal with botters and spoofers in the future.
